What are Some Problems with Nuclear Proliferation
There are evident problems with nuclear proliferation, the main one being that at some point and at some time, a rogue nation or terrorist group will succeed in acquiring a nuclear device of some type. Still today the biggest threat to America's security is the possibility of a terrorist group detonating a nuclear device somewhere in the country. Another major problem with nuclear proliferation is that as more and more countries acquire the technology to make nuclear weapons, the world becomes increasingly unstable. At the close of the Cold War, there was a sigh of relief that both the U.S. and Russia were scaling down their nuclear arsenals. How could it be that today, there is more threat of nuclear weapons than during those days? The answer is due to the amount of nations with nuclear weapons today. Some of these countries have unstable governments or leaders, and some are hostile to the U.S. North Korea poses one of the largest threats. Iran is aggressively trying to obtain nuclear weapons, and most experts believe they will get them within a few years. Furthermore, Iran is working with North Korea to develop ballistic missiles that would be capable of reaching the shores of the U.S. Syria is working with North Korea as well to develop a nuclear program. Russia is now working with Iran to help them develop their nuclear power capabilities, but again, nuclear power, nuclear weapons, not a great distance between the two. All of the nations mentioned present a concern and some a verified threat to the U.S.

Another problem with nuclear proliferation is the fact that as more and more nations acquire nuclear weapons, the risk just among themselves becomes an issue. Nations acquiring nuclear weapons are at odds with each other. Pakistan and India, for example. These nations are not friendly toward each other, and have a sensitive relationship with each other. Both have nuclear weapons. So the problem with nuclear proliferation extends much beyond the U.S. borders and interests.
